Project I: Preliminary Studies

Tasks:

Urban Study
The studio employs content driven design approach (Low, 2010) in which architecture becomes a narrative of an answer to the specific question given. The students are to derive design narratives for a community library in order to relate to and offer legibility in the urban context.

The site is at Jalan Sultan in Kuala Lumpur. The study has to be done in two levels of complexity, namely, the macro and micro contexts. Whilst the macro study is about the role and how the location fits into the city. In micro study the students are to make a comprehensive study on urban form, activity and movement-pattern. ‘Legibility Analysis’ (Responsive Environments, Bentley, et.al.) which is a method through the exploration of Kevin Lynch’s Elements of legibility (Lynch, 1960) is employed here as a study method. The students are to establish possible opportunities (such as routes and attractions) to sustain and to offer legibility by the community library. They will also begin to demonstrate an understanding of urban issues pertaining to quality of public realm, character, ease of movement, legibility and diversity.

The course work will integrate to Theories of Urbanism in which the Studio site (the street) will be studied for the spaces between the buildings which will focus on public realm furthering the case studies from the West. I have requested for theory of reference here is Gehl’s (2011 & 2013). This will contribute to the legibility analysis and thus demanding to be integrated to and submitted along with the Project 1 in week 4.
The findings from the urban study should be of:
  1. a)  What are the patterns on legibility in the existing urban fabric?
  2. b)  What are the characteristics that could offer legibility in the proposed community library?
  3. c)  What are the urban issues pertaining to the context?
  4. d)  Key ideas and themes to be discussed in relation to the analysis include: Legibility, Way-
finding (5 Lynchian Principles), Typology and Morphology, Figure/Ground Mapping, Patterns of Movement and Use, Human Behaviour, Street Culture
Precedent Studies
Each group is required to study and analyse one example of an urban infill that is a community library. In analysing this example, students should develop an understanding and awareness of:-

(1) What is an Urban Infill?
This investigation is to help you understand what an urban infill is, and what are the architectural strategies (massing, spatial planning, façade design, etc.) adopted that are necessary in response to its physical context and functional programme pertinent to the idea of legibility. Investigate what were the regulatory laws that the architects were required to comply to as well.

This part of the Precedent Study entails an investigation into a relevant example of a community library and inquiry into establishing its role within its specific context and community pertinent to the idea of legibility. The students are encouraged to explore the various definitions of community library here.

(2) What is a Community Library?
Key themes and criteria that require consideration in this study include the following: Programmatic Response, Formal Response, Public/Private Realms, Society & Culture

Reflection:

Semester 5 is mostly about urban design, so the lecturers introduced the legibility by Kevin Lynch to kickstart the semester. This node, edge, landmark, etc are pretty new to us as the site analysis for the previous semester are really different compared to what we are looking for this semester, therefore it really do help in developing the second project which we are looking into the site in Kuala Lumpur city centre area, therefore it requires certain urban design language in order for us to understand how to design and urban infill community library, it does widen our knowledge, encourage more understandings towards different architecture and even touched a lot on urban design which really made my eyes wide open.
